If you wanted to buy the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali and took your time with the decision - you’re out of luck. The entire production for 2024 is already reserved. You’ll have to wait until 2024 for GMC to open reservations for 2025. The world has gone absolutely mad for electric trucks.
The $108,695 starting price didn’t put off many people and, providing it stays at this level until the cars are ready for collection, it may be considered a bargain. If the inflation carries on for another couple of years, $100,000 won’t be worth that much anyway.
It seems GM strikes for the second time - first was the Hummer EV, sold out on the spot with an overwhelming majority of orders converting into actual purchases. The GMC Sierra sounds exactly the same - great truck, six-figure price tag, sold out in days. It just shows the market is literally starving for electric full-size trucks and people will wait however long it takes and will pay just to get their hands on one.
You’d think GMC learned from the first time around and was prepared for this to happen again but clearly, the company was taken by surprise. Duncan Aldred, the CEO of GMC and Buick, admitted that the market demand for $100,000+ electric vehicles, and especially trucks, has changed dramatically. He did confirm there were less than 10,000 reservations available and all sold out. All that is left is a waiting list.
The company will work hard now on preparing the production and ramping up the numbers. By the time 2024 comes, the manufacturing should be at its full speed and that’s when GMC plans to introduce more affordable versions of the Sierra EV. The range will expand with a $50,000 Elevation trim but not until the Denali trim production is up to speed.
GM already has issues with reservations for Hummer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV brought in additional 110,000 reservations and with current production levels it will take years to clear the reservation lists. Those numbers are hugely encouraging, they mean the public no longer needs any convincing, people clearly want electric cars.
Manufacturers spend billions on developing electric cars and millions on marketing campaigns - have they got any money left to manufacture and deliver the cars we have ordered? Then there is a case of pre-orders themselves - at $100 it clearly is not an issue and many people will place orders with many manufacturers in a hope to either get an electric car early or make money reselling the production slot or the car itself.
