"This audacious goal is, in fact, entirely achievable. The natural progression of the market itself is expected to bring this change largely on its own."
There is a slump in sales of EV in Europe, yet author thinks It's entirely achievable when currently only 20% are EV.
First, they need cheap EVs, I don't think people are so keen in buying Dacia EVs.
At worst, the government can force It, then there really will be only EVs sold, the question is in what numbers compared to current combined sales of ICE+Hybrid+EV.

unless someone created time dilation bubble, it's physically impossible to 'mine' lithium or anything at the current scale that's being done using child labor.
mainstream/social media really rots your brain.

Governments get easy credit for that. However, it is nothing different than putting your garbage trash in your neighbour's garden. EVs only export your carbon footprint within the city borders. However, the transformation is doing worse for the planet than ICE in terms of sustainability.

I saw how EV batteries are made, It's filled to the brim with glue. I really don't know how they want to recycle that unless they have a solution to dissolve the glue.
All the talk about the ecology, yet the batteries are anything but Eco-friendly.
I don't find EVs more sustainable than ICE. EVs increase the demand for fossil and nuclear generated energy. EVs require significant upgrade to existing power grids. Mining much more lithium increases child workers and requires more fossil fuel in mines. Producing more batteries and transporting them translates to more carbon footprint. The batteries become chemical waste after 6-8 years.
Fuelcell will be a much more sustainable technology.

Yet I would like to know how much KWh you need to produce by a powerplant so you can charge up your 100KWh battery.
uk should've switched a long time ago.
for such a tiny country, oops you've already arrived at your destination.
even electric golf carts would work on their b roads.
Anonymous, 15 Aug 2024Ban on ICE doesn't mean ban on hybrid, right? Hybrids have combustion motors, so they are... moreOn hybrids, it's a bit unclear: I recall that originally hybrids were going to get a few years longer, but the DfT haven't clarified this year. Also not clear whether all hybrids would qualify for an exception - I'm sure the marketing con "mild hybrid" won't, but it's possible that it will depend on how far they can travel without emissions.
(Personally I'd be wary of giving PHEVs an exemption just because so many of them are bought by fleets for tax reasons and never plugged in - and many PHEVs perform worse than standard hybrids if they are not charged.)

But because ICEs are so inefficient in converting stored energy into mechanical power even if all electricity came from the dirtiest fossil fuels switching to EVs would still massively reduce CO2 emissions from road transport.

Anonymous, 15 Aug 2024Ban on ICE doesn't mean ban on hybrid, right? Hybrids have combustion motors, so they are... moreIts not about where the electricity is coming from. Its about vehicles not emitting smoke where people live. Electric power plants are located away from residential areas so the smoke doesn't affect your health.
Ban on ICE doesn't mean ban on hybrid, right? Hybrids have combustion motors, so they are not zero emission.
And I am also pretty skeptical about viability of that ban in 2030, If now only 20% are electric cars.
Then let's not forget that even If all cars were pure electric the electricity is also coming from fossil fuels.
