It seems like it was a decade ago that it was reported that Chrysler was experimenting with a 2 cylinder Diesel powered generator to power an electric car. Success was reported at 100 MPG, and research was suddenly stopped. Much like a Diesel - Electric train, in use all across the world, high torque and performance would have been built in. Until we have the Hydrogen (water) powered automobile, it seems that fossil fuels to power engines or generate electric for homes and autos will be necessary.
How hard would it be to place a metal bumper conforming to the body's plastic front? No dings or scratches! They could also incorporate metal "Rub Bars" to protect the lower front pan from high curb blocks and sidewalks.
