Mitsubishi isn't a name you'd have so far associated with EVs, but, if the brand has its way, that will change in the next few years. And it all starts in 2026, when Mitsubishi will launch an EV crossover that will be built on the same AmpR Medium (ex CMF-EV) platform used by the Nissan Ariya and the Renault Megane E-Tech electric and the Renault Scenic E-Tech electric.
In fact, the Mitsubishi model might be the twin of Nissan's car which will replace the Leaf. The Nissan version will arrive first, with production slated to start before the end of this year. The Mitsubishi will launch next year.
Both of these will be coupe crossovers with sloping roofs. We're not sure yet how close they will be in terms of looks, but rumor has it they will be closer than the Hyundais and Kias which share a platform.
The Mitsubishi EV will be made in Japan and exported globally. The brand has a goal of selling 50% electrified vehicles by 2030, and 100% by 2035. It plans to launch nine new electric models by 2028, including two EVs using Renault/Nissan platforms, an in-house developed two-row SUV, and a midsize pickup truck. The truck will once again see Mitsubishi collaborate with Nissan, and will be made in Mexico.
