At Nio Day 2022, the company unveiled the brand new ES8, an all-purpose smart electric flagship SUV that caters to the needs of family life, work, socializing, and adventure. The ES8 was introduced alongside the EC7, Nio's other electric SUV model
The all-new ES8 is now built on the NT 2.0 platform. It has dimensions of 5,099 mm length, 1,989 mm in width, and 1,750 mm in height, and it has a wheelbase of 3,070 mm - significant improvement over the outgoing ES8.
The second-generation electric drive platform from Nio gives the ES8 the ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds while producing a maximum power output of 480 kW and 850 Nm of torque - again marked improvement when compared to the NT 1.0 based ES8.
Nio offers the ES8 in three variations: the normal, Executive, and Signature versions.
The standard version of the new ES8 starts at RMB 528,000 ($75,500) and comes with a standard range battery pack option with a capacity of 75 kWh and claimed 465 km of range. The 100 kWh model starts at RMB 586,000 ($83,800) and has a claimed range of 605 km. Customers can opt to lease the battery, which drops the price to a total of RMB 458,000 ($65,525) for both models, with monthly leasing rates of RMB 980 ($140) or RMB 1,680 ($240) for the 75 kWh and 100 kWh models, respectively.
The ES8 Executive model is available for purchase at a starting price of RMB 548,000 ($78,400) for the 75 kWh pack and RMB 606,000 ($86,700) for the 100 kWh version. Both models offer Nio's Battery as a Service (BaaS) program, with a car purchase price dropping to RMB 478,000 ($68,400) and monthly leasing fees of RMB 980 ($140) or RMB 1,680 ($240) for the 75 kWh and 100 kWh versions, respectively.
Currently, the Signature version of the ES8 is only available with a 100-kWh battery pack. It has a starting price of RMB 638,000 ($91,300) or RMB 510,000 ($73,000) thanks to the Battery as a Service (BaaS) program. The monthly leasing fee for the battery is RMB 1,680 ($240).
All versions will be at some point available with the largest 150 kWh battery pack which apparently gives the car 900 km of range on a single charge but the prices have not yet been released for this option.
Nio is now accepting reservations for the new ES8 from customers, with deliveries expected to begin in June 2023. From June, Nio showrooms will feature both display vehicles and cars that can be test driven
During a conference call with analysts on November 10, Nio CEO Li announced that the company plans to launch five new models by the first half of 2023, bringing the total number of available models to eight by June. This announcement was made after Nio released its third quarter earnings report.
Before the release of the EC7 and the new ES8, NIO had a total of six models in its lineup: three based on the NT 2.0 platform (the ES7, ET7, and ET5), and three based on the NT 1.0 platform (the ES8, ES6, and EC6). Prior to the launch of the EC7 and the new ES8, NIO's lineup consisted of the ET5, the ET7, and the ES8.
Nio plans to upgrade all of its models built on the NT 1.0 platform to the NT 2.0 platform, which means that the company will also have new models to unveil in the first half of 2023.
According to a research note published in November by a team led by Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu, Nio plans to redesign three of its models based on the NT 1.0 platform and release two new models by the first half of 2023.
The research team also mentioned that one of the new models will be a competitor to Tesla's Model Y, potentially called the ES5, with a projected starting price between RMB 330,000 and 340,000.
