Say hello to the Denza N8, the latest entrant in the heavyweight SUV bout, hailing from China's BYD, known for its electric vehicles and hybrids. Denza N8 is an SUV that comes in both Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) versions.
While it may not boast all the glitz and glamour of its sibling, the Denza N7, the N8 comes with its very own charm. Built around BYD's 'π-Motion' design language, the N8 has unique features that are worth a second glance. It sports daytime running lights that resemble the fangs of some creature of the night, an unmissable rear spoiler, and through-type tail lights, not to forget an anti-scratch plate at the base.
Measuring 0.16 inches / 76.8 inches / 67.9 inches, with a wheelbase of 111.4 inches, the Denza N8, a medium-to-large SUV, proudly stands its ground. It's got a slightly curved roof and blackened pillars that create this cool suspended effect. The door handles, however, skip the fancy pop-out design and stick with the tried and tested conventional style. No-frills, all function - that's what we're talking about here.
Dive under the hood, and you'll find a 102 kW 1.5T engine powering the PHEV version. The BEV version, on the other hand, flexes with a 230 kW front motor for the two-wheel drive model and a 230 kW front and 200 kW rear motor for the four-wheel drive model. It's clear that power isn't something the Denza N8 lacks.
Take a seat inside the N8, and you're met with a 15.6-inch touch screen, a double-spoke flat-bottom multi-functional steering wheel, and a floating full LCD instrument panel. A sound system with Dynaudio speakers promises crisp, clear audio while two large wireless charging pads for mobile phones sit at your fingertips. The SUV offers three seat configurations: five, six, or seven seats. A treat for the passengers in the back: tray tables, an LCD touchscreen to control air conditioning, and a large sunroof fitted with a sunshade curtain.
Going head-to-head with models like Li Auto's L8 and Wey's Lanshan DHT-PHEV, the Denza N8 enters a competitive landscape. It's clear that this SUV is not backing down, and there's a good chance it could carve out its own corner in the market. It will all depend on the price, which strangely still hasn't been confirmed. The car is expected to start at around $48,900 and go for as much as $62,900 for the priciest version. BYD is still assessing the market situation and will want to avoid cutting prices right after release - we'll have to wait a little bit longer to get that last piece of the puzzle.
