Chinese auto giant BYD isn't playing games anymore. As the world's top-selling electric car brand, BYD just made a move that could leave traditional gas-powered cars gasping for air. The company unveiled the "Glory Edition" variants of its Qin Plus and Chaser 05 sedans - with some impressively low prices.
So, how low are we talking? Beginning at just $11,100 (RMB 79,800) these newly launched electric cars aim to undercut similar gas-powered cars, sparking what could become a full-blown price war in the popular compact sedan segment in China.
This is BYD's second major play to snatch market share from traditional carmakers within a year. And it's not holding back, boldly declaring on social media that their new affordable electric vehicles have gas car companies panicking.
First of the new sedans is the BYD Qin Plus DM-i Glory Edition - a hybrid packing a range of 34 miles or 75 miles on a single charge, depending on the battery – plenty for a typical daily commute. This kind of capability will force the market to rethink what budget EVs can really do.
The battery-powered Qin Plus EV Glory Edition comes in five different options, starting at RMB 109,800 ($15,250) and going all the way to RMB 139,800 ($19,400) for the top-of-the-range model with the largest battery. Interestingly, while the prices are coming down, the equipment list grows longer, including the latest conversational virtual assistant.
Finally, the BYD Chaser 05 Glory Edition joins the firefight with the same stunning $11,100 starting price. Available in six trim levels, it also targets daily drivers with its 34 miles or 75 miles electric range options. This kind of capability will force the market to rethink what budget EVs can really do.
BYD's move sets off a price war alarm — the company appears dead set on disrupting the industry in 2024, shaking up a car market still relying heavily on gas engines. It's the "Year of the Dragon," and BYD has certainly set the stage for an epic battleground for car buyers' affections. Time will tell who blinks first.
Hybrid or battery-powered, BYD's got something for everyone with those sweet electric ranges. It's like they're daring gas car companies to keep up!
