The Shanghai Auto Show is approaching fast and every marketing machine out there is pushing new info out at full speed. Pretty much every automaker - not only Chinese - will have something to show in Shanghai and the list of new models is growing every day.
BYD joined the teasing game with yet another all-electric car to be unveiled next week at the show. This time it is a B-segment all-electric SUV that will be part of BYD's sprawling Dynasty family of electric and hybrid vehicles.
BYD Song LSo, what do we know about the new electric SUV? We know its name - it’ll be called BYD Song L. Together with its B-segment classification, it points to the idea it’ll be a bigger version of the BYD Song - BYD’s most popular model which sold over 142,000 units in the first quarter of this year.
The two photos the company released on its Weibo account suggest a much sleeker-looking SUV. Although the headlights resemble the rest of the Song family of vehicles, they are much narrower and look far more classy. The photo reveals as well the lack of side mirrors, those are replaced by cameras - the first time for BYD.
The photo of the rear confirms the BYD Song L isn’t just going to be a larger SUV. It will be coupe-shaped, very much like the Audi Q8 e-tron Sportback. The roof spoiler comes in two separate pieces like the one on Lexus RZ 450e but is far more pronounced. The overall design only shows that BYD has been paying attention to its competitors and it’s applying what it has learned.
BYD will very likely release more photos in the coming days before the vehicle’s official debut at the Shanghai Auto Show which starts next Tuesday. The show lasts 10 days and will be full of very interesting vehicles. When can we expect to see the BYD Song L on the road? Well - the clue is in the rearview cameras. Their use has been approved by the Chinese regulators, and they will become road legal from June 1. We should expect the Song L to launch soon after if not on the day to signify the new technology.
