BYD kicked off the Guangzhou auto show with the announcement of the Sea Lion 07 - it's first model in the Sea Lion series, which will incorporate SUVs in the Ocean series.
The Sea Lion 07 is a mid-sized SUV with a coupe-style low and sporty look. The Sea Lion 07 follows BYD's Oceanic Aesthetic design language and is based on the carmaker's e-Platform 3.0, built by BYD Global Design Director Wolfgang Josef Egger's team.
The BYD Sea Lion 07 will compete with the Tesla Model Y and is similarly sized - it's 190.2 inches long, 75.8 inches wide, 63.8 inches tall, and has a 115.4 inches wheelbase.
BYD will offer the Sea Lion 07 in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive variants and the car will have BYD's iTAC tech with DiSus-C intelligent damping control system.
BYD hasn't yeat announced the battery sizes nor the powertrain specs for the Sea Lion 07, sadly. The company did announce that all upcoming SUVs in the Ocean series will live under the Sea Lion model line, while the sedans will go under the Seal line.
BYD labels its models under the Dynasty series, named after historic Chinese ruling dynasties - Han, Tang, Qin, Song, and Yuan - and has the Ocean series, named after ships and sea creatures - Dolphin, Seal, Sea Lion.
The BYD Sea Lion 07 will reportedly cost between CNY 200,000 ($27,600, €25,450) and CNY 260,000 ($36,000, €33,100), a bit lower than the Tesla Model Y, which is at the top end of CNY 260,000.
