Imagine driving from New York City to Boston, or from Madrid to Barcelona, or indeed - from Madrid all the way to Portugal. All that on one single charge and in a van. That's roughly the distance the Fiat E-Scudo traveled - 311.18 miles to be exact - on a single charge.
And just to put a cherry on top, this drive happened across the picturesque backdrops of Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire in the UK. No wonder the previous record-holder, the GM BrightDrop Zevo 600, which clocked in 258 miles, might be feeling a bit left in the dust.
However, before we throw confetti and cue the trumpets, here's something even more intriguing: the official WLTP-rated range of the E-Scudo is 205 miles. That means this dynamic electric van drove a whopping 51% over its "official" range. Pretty spiffy for a vehicle that's basically the reliable pack mule of the automotive world, a brick on wheels, if you will.
And how long did this road trip take? Well, the E-Scudo and its trio of drivers needed 13 hours and 9 minutes to complete the adventure over a mix of urban and rural roads, embracing a typical day in the life of a van.
The van was sporting Bridgestone Duravis tires, which claim excellent energy efficiency. Perhaps that's its secret weapon? Maybe, but the average speed of nearly 24 mph is the more likely answer here - painfully slow progress is the secret sauce.
Damien Dally, the Managing Director at Fiat UK, couldn't contain his excitement, boasting about the E-Scudo's newfound fame in the Guinness World Records. And why not? It's not every day you see a van outdo itself in such a spectacular fashion.
But who was behind the wheel? Enter Kevin Booker, Sam Clarke, and Fergal McGrath. If the names sound familiar, it's because both McGrath and Booker have a history of breaking records, while for Clarke, this was a fabulous first.
McGrath rightly pointed out that this record isn't just for fun and games. It stands as a testament to the potential of electric commercial vehicles, especially in bustling urban centers. And he's absolutely right - in the cities, in the heavy traffic and stop-and-go scenarios, electric vehicles outshine their gas-powered counterparts. Long-distance travel and high speeds - well, let's just say that we're nearly there.
Fiat E-Scudo is a proud member of the Stellantis family in Europe, rubbing shoulders with siblings like the Citroen e-Dispatch, Peugeot e-Expert, and Toyota Proace Electric. The electric van segment is witnessing a surge in Europe, with an increasing number of businesses making the switch. The next time you're caught at a traffic light beside a van, you might want to give it a second glance. Because who knows? It might just be the next record breaker, waiting for its moment to shine.
