The Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ is the German brand’s first fully electric full-size sedan and as such it comes with great expectations. We already did a comprehensive review of the model a few months ago, but now it’s time to take a closer look at how it did in our range test.
Our test example is the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ with the AMG package. It has a giant 107.8 kWh usable battery capacity, which should allow for the longest range on one charge. Other members of the Mercedes EQ lineup either come with a smaller battery or a more energy-consuming AWD system. The EQS also has more efficient aerodynamics than the EQE, enabled by its longer body, which should further create a bigger gap between the two models.
Since the model is amongst the most aerodynamic cars in the world, it should also be a champion in terms of consumption, right? When it first launched, the EQS 450+ held the title for the “World’s most aerodynamic car”, a title since taken by the Lucid Air, which ever so slightly improved on its result. Nevertheless, the raindrop shape combined with the huge battery of the EQS should allow for an excellent result in our test, so let’s look at its results.
As you can see, the EQS 450+ we had performed amazingly on our test routes, which include constant driving at constant speeds at the same place with each car we test. Our ambient temperature was near perfect at 70°F.
At our lowest testing speed of 37 mph the EQS isn’t among the top-performers as it is still a heavy vehicle with many working systems at all times and at that speed the aerodynamics isn't as much help. Still, at this speed the 107.8 kWh battery proves as a big benefit and our data shows you can travel the impressive 544 miles in one charge.
Once we move on to 56 mph we notice how significant the low drag coefficient of 0.20 Cd is and how little the consumption rises. This is the speed limit for most non-highway routes around the world, which means most vehicles usually ride with speeds around that, where the EQS is actually most efficient.
At the highest testing speed of 81 mph we observed excellent comsumption, although perhaps not as great as the aerodynamics would have us expect. There's clearly room for improvement in the drivetrain efficiency, but even so the EQS 450+ delivered impressive endurance.
In conclusion, the EQS 450+ isn’t the most efficient vehicle possible, yet thanks to its huge battery it makes for an excellent road trip companion. If all you want is a luxurious range champion, then the EQS 450+ is your greatest choice.
