Just days after Tesla started taking orders for its updated Model Y Long Range in North America, a significant amount of new inventory is already available for immediate delivery in some areas of the United States. This rather unusual availability of the popular electric SUV suggests a drop in consumer demand for Tesla's vehicles.
On Friday, Tesla launched the non-Launch Edition of the refreshed Model Y in the US and Canada. This version follows the earlier release of the fully loaded Launch Edition, which was priced at $60,000 and had been available since January, with deliveries starting in early March. The new Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive is priced at a more accessible $49,000. Historically, the Long Range AWD has been the most sought-after Model Y configuration in North America.
Industry observers are closely watching several indicators to gauge the demand for this latest version of Model Y, including delivery timelines for new orders and the level of available inventory. Initial reports indicate that for many US zip codes, the estimated delivery time for a new Model Y order is between one and three weeks. Surprisingly, in some areas on both the East and West Coasts, Tesla's website indicates that immediate delivery is possible.
Adding a little bit of secrecy to the situation, the available inventory is not prominently displayed on Tesla's "New Inventory" search page. Instead, some customers configuring their new Model Y are reportedly seeing a pop-up notification directing them to available vehicles. This hidden inventory suggests that Tesla may not have the strong backlog of orders that is typically expected for newly released models.
The Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD offers an estimated range of around 311 miles on a single charge. It features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.8 seconds, with a top speed of 135 mph.
The base price for the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD in the US is $48,990, excluding any potential federal or state tax credits. In Canada, the same model starts at $69,990 CAD. Both prices are slightly higher compared to the previous generation Model Y Long Range AWD.
So what's the difference? It's not a backlog. They have it on stock. Just not in the parking lot outside your house.
Misleading as hell, they're only available pretty much only California, 1-3 weeks wait everywhere else. But of course that's not as clickbaity of a headline 😂
