DS Automobiles has just pulled the wraps off its newest flagship model, the DS N°8, a 100% electric SUV coupé. The DS N°8 is a striking vehicle with a slightly strange name and a sleek, aerodynamic design inspired by the DS Aero Sport Lounge concept car. This focus on aerodynamic efficiency results in a low drag coefficient of 0.24, contributing to the vehicle's impressive range of up to 466 miles on the WLTP cycle. Even more impressively, DS claims a motorway range of over 311 miles.
The DS N°8 is the brand's first vehicle designed exclusively for electric power. It also introduces a new naming convention. According to the official press release, the "N" signifies elegance and timelessness, and the "°" symbol is reminiscent of a diamond, reflecting the brand's DNA. That's a lot going on in a simple name.
The DS N°8's exterior design is a testament to French luxury. Measuring 4.82 meters long, 1.90 meters wide, and 1.58 meters high, the N°8 has a commanding presence on the road. Its flowing lines and sculpted surfaces enhance its visual appeal and cleverly contribute to its aerodynamic performance.
The front end features the innovative DS Luminascreen illuminated grille and three-module headlamps with a distinctive Clous de Paris pattern. The V-shaped DS Lightblade daytime running lights, integrated into the bumper, accentuate the vehicle's width. But this isn't the end of fancy names for vehicle parts.
At the rear, the vertical LIGHT BLADE tail lights (not the same as front Lightblade items) provide a unique signature. The extended dual-tone paintwork, with a deep black roof extending onto the hood and grille, adds a touch of sophistication and pays homage to classic French coachbuilding techniques.
The interior of the DS N°8 is essentially a long list of items synonymous with comfort and tranquility. High-quality materials, including brushed aluminum and Nappa leather, are all over the cabin, while advanced technology seamlessly integrates into the design.
The pushed-back dashboard creates a sense of space and serenity. Clous de Paris embossing on the steering wheel and air vents, along with pearl stitching on the dashboard and armrests, add to the luxurious feel. The innovative Inner Lightblade vertical light signatures illuminate the door handles and elevate their boring function to a futuristic experience.
The seats promise comfort, with high-density foams and adjustable side bolsters. Front seats are heated, cooled, and equipped with a massage function. Rear passengers enjoy ample legroom and headroom, with seats inclined at a comfortable 30-degree angle.
The driver gets a 10.25-inch instrument display with dynamic "Digital ART" content and a new X-shaped steering wheel. A 16-inch central touchscreen provides access to the DS Iris System 2.0, which can be controlled by voice or touch.
The DS N°8 is built on the Stellantis Group's STLA Medium platform, which has been optimized to accommodate a large battery pack with a capacity of up to 97.2 kWh. Buyers will have a choice of three electric powertrains: FWD with 230 hp (260 hp with temporary boost) and a 74 kWh battery, FWD Long Range with 245 hp (280 hp with temporary boost) and a 97.2 kWh battery, and finally, AWD Long Range with 350 hp (375 hp with temporary boost) and a 97.2 kWh battery.
The AWD Long Range model sprints from 0 to 62 mph in 5.4 seconds, while the FWD versions achieve the same sprint in 7.7/7.8 seconds. All versions have a top speed limited to 118 mph. The DS N°8 supports fast charging at up to 160 kW, allowing for a 20% to 80% charge in just 27 minutes. An 11 kW onboard AC charger is standard, with a 22 kW option coming later.
The DS N°8 comes packed with the latest technology designed to enhance comfort, safety, and convenience. A camera-controlled active suspension system adapts to road conditions in real time for a smooth and comfortable ride. An augmented reality head-up display projects essential information onto the windscreen. An infrared camera system detects pedestrians and animals in low-light conditions. Intelligent headlights adapt to driving conditions and prevent dazzling other drivers. And, of course, there's a full suite of advanced ADAS features with the usual lane-keeping assist, auto-parking, lane changing, and more.
The DS N°8 offers a comprehensive suite of connected services, including a powerful and intuitive infotainment system with voice control, smartphone integration, and connected navigation. Essential services such as SOS & ASSISTANCE, remote maintenance, and over-the-air updates are included as well. Optional Connect Plus Pack offers advanced features such as in-car EV Routing, battery preconditioning, and Plug & Charge functionality.
With its combination of striking design, advanced technology, and impressive range, the DS N°8 definitely stands out in the busy electric vehicle market. It represents an interesting alternative for buyers looking for a luxurious and efficient EV that doesn't compromise on style or performance. The DS N°8 is expected to launch in Europe in mid-2025 with prices starting at just under $67,000 for the FWD model, $72,100 for the FWD Long Range version and $94,300 for the top-of-the-range AWD LR trim.
