Following Nio itself and Onvo, Nio's stable is about to get even bigger as it welcomes its third and cheapest brand yet: Firefly. This will be officially presented during Nio Day 2024 on December 21 when its first model will also be introduced, but ahead of that today the company gave us some teaser details.
First off, here's the official logo for the Firefly brand. Next up, let's talk availability. Firefly will be launching its first car in China initially, sometime during the first half of next year. Then it will expand to Europe about one quarter (so around three months) after that.
The first EV will be priced competitively in Europe before the additional tariffs recently imposed on Chinese EVs by the EU. If we add those in, then "the model's competitiveness will be affected a bit" according to brand president Daniel Jin. Demand is very high in Europe for a "smart, high-end boutique small car" as Firefly will position its first model.
Firefly's main competitors in Europe for the debut EV will be the Renault 5 and the VW ID.2, Jin thinks. Firefly will interestingly have different chassis tuning for Chinese and European consumers, with the work for the latter being done in the UK.
After that, the brand will go to Southeast Asia and Latin America, but it currently has no plans to land in the US. Firefly will support battery swapping, but won't be able to use Nio's and Onvo's stations in China due to it having smaller batteries. Firefly will build its own battery swapping infrastructure "based on user demand". It's not jumping on the swapping train because its cars will be small and primarily used for commuting in cities, a use case in which range anxiety isn't a problem.
Its about time Nio decides upon a universal swap standard for EV batteries like CATL has done.
