In a surprising showdown, the electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and the BMW M3 CS went head-to-head in a drag race. Despite the Ioniq 5 N's superior power output, the lighter M3 CS managed to stay ahead by a slim margin.
The Ioniq 5 N delivers an impressive 601 horsepower, which can be temporarily boosted to 650 hp using the N button. This power boost lasts for about 10 seconds, and it is a significant advantage in a drag race. But it is the M3 CS, despite having a lower power output of 543 hp, that benefits from being much lighter, weighing almost {{1,000 lbs}} less than the Ioniq 5 N.
The race was hosted by Edmunds, known for its unique U-Drag format. The unique part is a U-turn at the quarter-mile mark, adding a handling element to the traditional drag race. The M3 CS was quicker both in a straight line and around the corner, increasing its lead in the first part of the race. The Ioniq 5 N's instant power delivery allowed it to gain some ground coming out of the corner.
The M3 CS clocked a 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds, while the Hyundai achieved a 3.3-second sprint time. In the quarter mile, the M3 CS recorded a time of 11 seconds flat, while the Ioniq 5 N was two-tenths of a second slower.
The M3 CS emerged as the victor, but the Ioniq 5 N's performance is commendable, especially considering its price, which is almost half that of the BMW. The Ioniq 5 N proves it is a formidable contender in the performance car segment, keeping up with some of the quickest cars on the market.
