Ford Motor Company posted impressive electric vehicle sales figures for January. The automaker's electric lineup, led by the Mustang Mach-E, achieved record-breaking sales, giving a strong start to the year for Ford's EV ambitions.
The company sold a total of 5,666 EVs in the United States - that's 21.2% more than the same time last year. The Mustang Mach-E achieved its best-ever January sales, with 3,529 units finding new homes. This is a substantial 173% increase compared to January of the previous year.
The Mach-E's impressive performance positioned it as the second-best-selling electric SUV in the nation, trailing only the Tesla Model Y. Although Ford would try to make it sound impressive, the gap between Model Y and Mach-E will take years to close.
These strong sales numbers prove Mach-E's growing popularity. While the model experienced a dip in sales at the beginning of 2024, Ford successfully addressed those challenges, leading to a resurgence in sales throughout the year, culminating in a total of 52,000 units sold in the US - still a long way behind over the 372,000 units of Model Y sold last year.
Ford's electric pickup truck F-150 Lightning contributed to the positive sales trend with a 7.6% increase in retail sales. Ford's hybrid vehicles enjoyed a significant boost as well. The F-150 Hybrid sales climbed by 38.2% to 4,368 units - another record start to the year.
Overall, Ford's electrified vehicle sales, which include hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles, reached 18,961 units in January, a 19.8% increase from the previous year and a new record for the month. The overall EV market also continues to grow, with 1.3 million electrified vehicles sold in the US last year, up 7.4% from 2023, although individual automakers are experiencing varied success.
Tesla saw its overall sales decline in 2024, with a double-digit drop in California. When we compare its results with the growth experienced by other EV manufacturers, there is a possibility there's already a market shift underway.
