MG took the wraps off its new MGS5 electric SUV in the United Kingdom. The new EV will go on sale this April, bringing another option to the compact electric vehicle market. Positioned as a rival to models like the Skoda Elroq and Kia EV3, the MGS5 should attract buyers with its competitive pricing and plenty of practical features. With a starting price under $38,300, MG hopes to replicate the success of its MG4 hatchback.
The MGS5 shares its platform with the MG4, using the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP). All versions are powered by a 228 hp motor driving the rear wheels. The vehicle offers two battery options: 49 kWh offering a range of 211 miles and a 64 kWh variant rated at 298 miles. The larger battery is capable of up to 139 kW DC charging and can go from 10% to 80% charge in just 28 minutes.
When it comes to design, the MGS5 plays it safe. It draws some inspiration from the MG Cyberster, featuring a smooth front end and a modern aesthetic. At 175.98 inches long, it offers plenty of space for four adults and it has a 16 ft³ trunk. MG has also focused on improving the interior, incorporating upgraded materials and a new 12.8-inch infotainment system. Physical buttons for audio and climate controls address customer feedback, enhancing usability.
The MGS5 will be available in three trim levels: SE Standard Range, SE Long Range, and Trophy Long Range. The base SE model starts at $37,589, with the Long Range versions priced at $40,887 and $44,185, respectively. The top-tier Trophy model comes with heated seats, a leatherette upholstered interior, and a 360-degree camera. MG has also updated its MG Pilot driver assistance system with features like adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning.
With the UK and European electric car markets expanding rapidly, the MGS5 enters the most competitive segment. MG will hope to capture a significant share by offering a well-rounded package that combines affordability, range, and practicality. With Tesla seemingly out of favor with the European buyers, the MGS5 might just persuade some customers to switch. The vehicle’s launch in the UK will be followed by a European rollout later in the spring.
