As technology continues to make unprecedented strides in the auto industry, two giants are pairing up to pave the way for a new era of driving. Enter Polestar and Mobileye, who are collaborating to infuse the forthcoming Polestar 4 with Mobileye’s Chauffeur autonomous driving technology. Now, before you get too excited, remember this is a journey and not an overnight destination. So, let’s unpack this.
Launching in China this year and hitting the global scene in 2024, the Polestar 4 aims to set new standards. Not only is the car boasting an engaging blend of design from the Polestar Precept concept and the modernity of a stylish SUV, but it's also putting forward the inclusion of Mobileye’s SuperVision-based ADAS from the outset. To simplify, think of this as a tantalizing preview to the main show – the eventual inclusion of the Chauffeur technology.
So, what does the Chauffeur technology really promise? The system is designed to offer "eyes-off" autonomous driving on highways, giving drivers the chance to kick back and relax. Sounds dreamy, right? But it doesn't stop there. Even in city terrains, where constant attention is the norm, Chauffeur provides an "eyes-on" automated driving experience. However let's keep our feet on the ground— the specifics on this aren’t out yet, so a touch of patience and a sprinkle of skepticism will go a long way.
Thomas Ingenlath, the CEO of Polestar, chimed in with an interesting take. He noted that driving isn’t always the adrenaline-fueled, wind-in-your-hair experience we imagine. Sometimes, it's just plain tedious. And that's where Mobileye's tech could change the game, giving drivers the option to switch on autonomous driving when the mundane hits. He actually makes a good point.
Mobileye isn’t new to the scene. With a portfolio that boasts technologies leading the future of mobility, Mobileye has firmly stamped its mark since 1999. We’re talking about a whopping 150 million vehicles worldwide built with Mobileye's technology. Some of its standout features include REM™ crowdsourced mapping and Responsibility Sensitive Safety (RSS). In a recent twist of events, in 2022, Mobileye began its journey as a separate entity from Intel, which, by the way, still has majority ownership.
On the other side of this collaboration is Polestar, the Swedish electric sensation making significant headway in the world of sustainable mobility. With a plan to launch five EVs by 2026, Polestar is ensuring that the future of automobiles is electrifying, both in performance and sustainability. Speaking of sustainability, the Polestar 0 project is a testament to the brand's commitment to the environment, aiming for a climate-neutral production car by 2030. Ambitious? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely.
