According to a new analysis, Tesla's backlog is shrinking for the first time in a while. That's good news for Tesla customers, but probably also a great sign for the industry in general. As of August 31, the supposed backlog comprises roughly 414,000 cars, which equals about 102 days of production.
The analysis suggests that we are past the peak as the backlog back in the March-July period was roughly 500,000 cars. Still, there's still a long way from the 250,000 cars on the wait list reported back in late 2021.
Part of reason is the good performance of the Chinese Shanghai Gigafactory as well as Fremont's plant in California. They are currently outputting an impressive amount of cars and Shanghai alone reduced the wait times for Model 3 and Model Y in China significantly. Now, certain models have a delivery time of only 1 week. Tesla's goal, however, is about 4-8 weeks wait time for all of its models in order to provide a good buying experience.
Unfortunately, there are still some models that require a lot of waiting. The Model X LR, for example, has a delivery time of a full year as there are 22,000 units in the backlog. The Model 3 LR AWD is also seeing significant delays from the Fremont factory and the estimated delivery has been bumped up to 202 days. The Model Y LR AWD is also in high demand in the US and customers would have to wait at least 167 days.
Tesla is on track to meet the demand and analysts believe that the company will introduce new trims or even lower prices as soon as the supply-demand balance is restored.
