Tesla announced new control cabinets for its V4 Superchargers, enabling up to 500 kW charging rate for some vehicles and up to 1.2 MW for Tesla's Semi. Up until now, the V4 Superchargers were limited to 250 kW like their V3 Supercharger predecessors, but the bottleneck was the control cabinets.
With the new switch cabinets in place, users can take full advantage of the new V4 Superchargers. This will boost the Cybertruck's charging times by 30%, according to Tesla's representative. Still, the Model S, 3, X and Y are capped at 250 kW.
There are other gains from the upgrade to be had. For instance, the new control cabinets can supply up to eight V4 Superchargers, which is twice as many as before. This saves money, space and boosts efficiency. Even the cabinets themselves are simpler, take less space and have three times the energy density compared to before..
However, it's not possible to charge eight vehicles at 500 kW. Tesla is capping it to 1 MW for every 8 chargers. According to Tesla, this is a fringe scenario and only 1% of the time, vehicles will receive less power than what they are capable of handling.
