Ram introduced the 2025 1500 Ramcharger. This new pickup truck is actually an EREV that promises to alleviate the persistent range anxiety that plagues electric vehicle enthusiasts, particularly when heavy towing is on the agenda.
At the heart of this behemoth lies a 70.8-kWh battery, estimated to deliver 145 miles of pure electric driving bliss. It powers a robust all-wheel-drive powertrain, with formidable 663 horsepower output.
Distinguishing itself from the all-electric Ram 1500 REV, the Ramcharger's features a 3.6l Pentastar V6 generator that can refill the batter at up to 130 kW. Ram engineers put a lot of stress on the fact that this V6 is not connected to the drivetrain in any way, but if needed the generator can supply the two electric motors directly. With a full tank and battery Ram estimates you can go 690 miles.
With access to a DC fast-charger, the Ram 1500 Ramcharger can gulp down enough electricity for a 50 miles journey in 10 minutes. Level 2 home charging is also supported for when you are in less of a hurry.
Perhaps one of the Ramcharger's most intriguing features is its bi-directional charging capability. Not only can it receive power, but it can also give back, serving as a mobile power station with a 7.2-kW output - enough to keep the lights on when out in the nature or rescue another electric vehicle in distress.
The Ramcharger has a towing capacity of 14,000 lb and a payload of 2,625 lb. It's a vehicle that not only matches its electric counterpart's capabilities but also extends beyond the reach of gas-only pickups.
The Ramcharger comes in a variety of trims, from the practical Tradesman to the opulent Tungsten and Limited in an attempt to serve more price points.
The interior of the Ramcharger features a digital gauge cluster and a large 14.5-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 5 software. Add to this the availability of a hands-free driver-assist system, and it's clear that the Ramcharger is as much about tech as it is about sheer power.
For those who seek the pinnacle of luxury, akin to the plush environs of a Mercedes EQS, the Ramcharger's Tungsten model comes with quilted leather seats that offer 24-way adjustments, and a massage feature.
While the Ram 1500 Ramcharger is not slated for release until late 2024, anticipation is already building. With reservations open for a limited time, this EREV truck hopes to redefine what it means to drive a pickup in the modern era.
