The new Freelander 8 hopes to save Jaguar Land Rover in China

We are watching a famous nameplate make a surprising comeback. Jaguar Land Rover and Chery revealed the new Freelander 8 in China, and it's nothing like the small SUV you might remember from the early 2000s. The new version is a large vehicle that runs on electricity - a massive shift for both companies as they try to win over buyers who want modern electric cars. The live debut happened just after the first teaser photos appeared online, giving us a clear look at what the future holds for this brand.

Size is the first thing people notice about this new model. The Freelander 8 is 16.7 ft long, making it a heavy hitter on the road. The designers chose a blocky, rugged shape that looks a lot like the original Land Rover Freelander - it has rectangular headlights and an active air intake on the front to help with cooling. Glossy plastic trim wraps around the body to give it a tough look. Even the window lines remind people of the classic SUV that helped start the crossover craze decades ago.

The outside of the car is full of clever details that show off its tech. The door handles stay tucked away inside the doors until you need them. Huge side-view mirrors help the driver see everything around the car. Up top, you will find roof racks for carrying gear on long trips. The back of the car has a spoiler with four cameras built right into it. You cannot miss the name, either. The word "Freelander" is carved right into the tailgate in large letters. There are also badges that say "8 Super" and "i-ATS" to tell everyone which version you bought.

Technology is a major selling point for modern EVs. The Freelander 8 uses a LiDAR sensor from Huawei that features 896 lines. This sensor helps the car "see" the road and everything nearby with great detail. It works with a system called ADS 4.1 to help the driver stay safe and stay in the lane. This high-tech gear makes it one of the most advanced electric cars coming to the market - it even has the latest powerful Snapdragon 8397 chip.

Inside the cabin, a giant screen stretches across the middle of the dashboard. It handles everything from navigation to music. Chery used a similar design in another SUV called the Jetour G700, so they already know the setup works well for drivers. Under the screen, you still get a row of physical buttons for things you need to access quickly. The steering wheel has an oval shape and uses two different colors of material.

Most people will likely keep their shiny new SUVs on paved city streets, but this one can do much more. Engineers tested the Freelander 8 on 20 different types of terrain to make sure it can handle any situation. The car can actually predict what the road will be like and change its settings in a split second. To help with the rough stuff, it has a mechanical lock for the front wheels and an electronic diff to stop the rear wheels from slipping. It also uses a smart air suspension system with two chambers, helping the car stay level and comfortable even when the road gets seriously bumpy.

The new brand - Freelander - is a big gamble for the joint venture known as CJLR. Sales for their current Land Rover and Jaguar models in China have been falling and in the first three months of 2026, the company only sold 2,153 cars made in China. That is a drop of nearly 40% compared to the year before. Because of these poor numbers, the company is making a huge change. They plan to stop making the Range Rover Evoque, the Discovery Sport, and three different Jaguar models by the end of 2026. They are clearing out the old to make room for the new.

The factory in China has the capacity to build 200,000 cars every year. Soon, that entire space will focus on the Freelander brand. The Freelander 8 started as a project for Chinese drivers, but it will travel much further. The company plans to sell these electric cars in the Middle East starting later this year. We will see the car again in June for another presentation before it officially goes on sale and its success might decide the future of the entire partnership between these two car giants.
