Volkswagen is making a strong push in the Chinese electric car market with a big update to its ID.UNYX 06, an electric SUV produced by its joint venture in Anhui. This refreshed model gets a range of improvements in technology, entertainment, and how owners can personalize their vehicles. To gain more attention from buyers, Volkswagen Anhui has announced substantial temporary price reductions across all four versions of the ID.UNYX 06: Pure, Pro, Ultra, and Max.
Originally priced between RMB 189,900 and RMB 249,900 (about $26,350 to $34,690), these EVs now have much lower promotional prices. The Pure version starts at RMB 149,900 ($20,560), the Pro at RMB 169,900 ($23,330), the Ultra at RMB 189,900 ($26,100), and the top-of-the-line Max at RMB 209,900 ($28,970).
To make owning an electric car even more appealing, Volkswagen is offering several limited-time incentives. These include financing options like a 5-year loan with no interest or a 7-year loan with no down payment. Customers can also benefit from trade-in bonuses, a special "Brand Light Enjoyment Package," an extended warranty, five years of free connected vehicle services, and 50,000 bonus points. For those purchasing during the Shanghai Auto Show or the May Day holiday, the "Golden Badge VW" venture is providing additional discounts of RMB 4,000 ($550) for the Pure trim and RMB 6,000 ($825) for the Pro, Ultra, and Max versions.
The ID.UNYX 06 features a unique look that distinguishes it from other Volkswagen vehicles. It has a closed front grille along with a bold lower bumper designed to improve airflow. A new "Twilight Blue" color option is now available. The rear of the vehicle has a sleek design that combines the spoiler, taillights, and the high-mounted brake light, featuring eye-catching three-dimensional taillights.
Inside, Volkswagen aimed for a more luxurious feel. Gold accents are used on the dashboard, instrument panel trim, steering wheel, and air vents. These details particularly stand out with the optional white interior, creating a stylish appearance.
The ID.UNYX 06 introduces Volkswagen's latest ID.S 5.4 infotainment system. This system includes new features like in-car gaming, social networking within a "metaverse," an integrated fragrance system, and a mode editor. Volkswagen has also improved 31 human-machine interface (HMI) functions, including the 3D Avatar, the general layout of the screens, a Large Language Model (LLM) integration, and the One App remote control system.
The base model, the ID.UNYX 06 Pure, comes with a 53.6 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery, providing a driving range of 265 miles based on the CLTC standard. Volkswagen emphasizes the vehicle's balanced weight distribution, sport-oriented tires with different widths on the front and rear, a five-link independent rear suspension, optional adaptive suspension control, and five different driving modes.
The ID.UNYX is the first and currently the only vehicle from the Volkswagen Anhui joint venture, which partners with local automaker JAC Motors. Often called "Golden Badge VW" because of its distinct gold logo, the original ID.UNYX reportedly had low sales, contributing to financial losses for JAC Motors in 2024.
In related news from Shanghai, Volkswagen also unveiled three concept vehicles: the ID. AURA, ID. ERA, and ID. EVO. These concept cars, along with other Volkswagen models, were presented at the Volkswagen Group Night and will be on display at Auto Shanghai.
All production versions of these concepts will feature AI-based systems for highly automated driving, aiming for Level 2++ autonomy as early as next year. This technology will allow the cars to handle certain driving situations independently, such as overtaking, turning, and merging, all while the driver remains in control. Volkswagen plans to launch over 20 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China over the next three years, incorporating advanced technologies to meet the diverse needs of Chinese customers.
