At the Beijing Auto Show today, Volkswagen introduced the ID. Code "design show car" (because "concept" sounds oh-so outdated or something) developed specifically for customers in China. This car won't ever become reality in itself, but it does introduce completely new aesthetics and previews an upcoming large SUV.
The ID. Code is part of VW's "in China, for China" strategy, through which it strives to try and actually compete in the world's most competitive EV market. VW promises it will have over 30 new models across all powertrains and in all segments for Chinese customers by 2030, which is a lot.
VW will also introduce the ID.UX electric sub-brand in China at some point this year with the ID.Unyx EV in order to "tap into new customer groups", according to the official press release. It's working on a new electric platform specifically for China, and at least four entry-level EVs will be built based on it from 2026.
Anyway, back to the ID. Code. It's "designed for Level 4 fully autonomous driving",and VW thinks it's reminiscent of a Gran Turismo with its "powerful, clear, and fluid surfaces".
It has "AI-assisted light and display systems", and the "living space on board" (aka interior) is a place where "real and virtual worlds meet to create a new mobility experience", whatever any of that means.
There are no more details because this isn't a real car, the whole point of it is for us to gawk at it and imagine the upcoming SUV that will be based on it. And for most of us, imagine is all we'll be doing about it, since it will only launch in China.
