Mercedes-Benz and Google team up to revolutionize in-car navigation

Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz and Google Cloud have joined forces to redefine the in-car navigation experience. Their collaboration will integrate Google Cloud's advanced Automotive AI Agent into the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) Virtual Assistant. The new technology, powered by Google's Gemini family of LLM, promises to transform how drivers interact with their vehicles.

The MBUX Virtual Assistant will be capable of understanding and responding to natural language queries, giving drivers an intuitive way to access information. By using Google Maps Platform data, the system can offer real-time updates on traffic, points of interest, and more. Asking your car, "Where's the nearest EV charging station with available chargers?" or "Find me a coffee shop with outdoor seating and Wi-Fi," is no longer a sci-fi dream. Although both Google and Mercedes promise instant and accurate responses, we'll wait and see.

This conversational capability is made possible by Google Cloud's Automotive AI Agent, an AI platform designed specifically for the automotive industry. The agent's ability to reference Google Maps Platform's comprehensive database of over 250 million places gives drivers access to the most up-to-date information available. With over 100 million daily updates, the map data stays fresh and accurate - no more dreaded updates.

The Automotive AI Agent can engage in complex, multi-turn dialogues, retaining context and memory of previous interactions. This means drivers can ask follow-up questions or refine their requests without repeating information. For instance, after inquiring about a nearby restaurant, a driver could ask, "What is their rating?" or "Is it open right now?" and get relevant answers.

The new AI-powered Point-of-Interest search and navigation feature will debut in the new Mercedes-Benz CLA later this year. This model will be the first to feature the new Mercedes-Benz operating system, MB.OS. The rollout will continue to other models equipped with the MBUX Voice Assistant.

This collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Google Cloud is a big step forward in the evolution of in-car infotainment systems. Having a more intuitive, informative, and enjoyable driving experience has been quite a big ask since the introduction of giant screens. Let's hope Mercedes can make sense of all the AI stuff, and Google won't mess it up along the way. Oh - and you can bet your lunch money there will be a subscription for that.

Let's be honest, compared to what Mercedes is using right now, it can only be a huge improvement in voice controls. But other than that I see no added value to the driver or passengers while travelling - it can be useful when you sit on a char...

Will Google-MB adversarial UI periodically change to re-bury settings to disable MB nags and opt-out of Google harvesting? How many clicks does it take to say "no"?
