Nissan is adding some serious spice to its electric SUV lineup with the introduction of the Ariya Nismo to the UK market. This performance-tuned version of the Ariya promises to deliver a thrilling driving experience, merging the instant torque of an electric powertrain with Nismo's racing heritage.
Priced from £56,620, the Ariya Nismo undercuts one of its main rivals, the Tesla Model Y Performance, by quite a substantial £3,370. For that price, buyers get a vehicle that has impressive performance figures. The dual-motor setup generates 429 bhp and 443 lb-ft of torque, propelling the Ariya Nismo from 0 to 62 mph in 5 seconds.
While it may not be the absolute powerhouse in its class, falling short of the Kia EV6 GT and Hyundai Ioniq 5 N in terms of sheer power, the Ariya Nismo focuses on delivering a balanced and engaging driving experience. Nismo engineers have meticulously tuned the Ariya's e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system to provide a 60:40 rear-biased torque distribution, enhancing the SUV's sporty handling characteristics.
The suspension has also undergone revisions to improve body control and agility, while the steering has been recalibrated for a more direct and responsive feel. Stopping power comes courtesy of upgraded brake pads and a revised regenerative braking system.
To further enhance grip and handling, the Ariya Nismo rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires. These tires not only contribute to the vehicle's performance but also aid in reducing unsprung mass and improving brake cooling.
Nissan has gone beyond just mechanical enhancements. The Ariya Nismo features a unique aerodynamic package that includes a redesigned front bumper with a prominent splitter and larger air intakes, as well as a rear spoiler and diffuser.
The Ariya Nismo's sporty theme continues inside the cabin. Nismo sport seats with suede-like upholstery, a Nismo-specific steering wheel, and red accents throughout the interior are the main focus. Even the driver's display graphics have been revised to match the car's performance-oriented character.
The Ariya Nismo marks the return of the Nismo performance brand to Europe, and it joins a growing segment of high-performance electric SUVs, competing against established rivals like the Tesla Model Y Performance and the award-winning Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.
