Rivian's much-anticipated refresh for the R1S and R1T is finally here. The company calls the new models "second generation", as they have allegedly been "completely reengineered through hundreds of hardware improvements, performance upgrades, a fully redesigned software experience, and evolved in-house drive systems".
The iconic exterior design stays the same, but the quad-motor R1T now develops 1,025 hp and 1,198 lb-ft torque to achieve a 0 to 60 mph time of just 2.5 seconds.
New Large and Max battery packs come with redesigned modules and efficient packaging allowing for a maximum range of 420 miles. The entry-level Standard pack has an EPA-estimated 270 miles of range instead.
Rivian says the drag coefficient is as low as 0.297, although it doesn't specify for which model. New 22" tires help reduce drag, and there's also a redesigned heat pump-based thermal system that improves rider temperature comfort and saves energy.
These are built upon an entirely new electrical architecture and compute platform, which let the company remove 1.6 miles of wiring from each vehicle. The new in-house developed Rivian Autonomy Platform makes its debut with 11 cameras, 5 radars, and "AI prediction technology". This has 360-degree visibility and 8 times the camera megapixels from previous vehicles, as well as redundant sensors that let it see "far into the distance even in poor weather and light conditions".
This is standard on all models. The premium option is called Rivian Autonomy Platform+ and it comes with an expanded feature set including lane change on command now and Enhanced Highway Assist "later this year".
The headlights have adaptive beams which will be enabled later this year. You can store the new models' keys in Apple Wallet on your iPhone or Apple Watch, and there's even support for "select Google Pixel devices". With Rivian Connect+ you can stream video through Google Cast from more than 3,000 apps, and it supports Apple Music too (including Spatial Audio).
The dynamic glass roof can be electronically tinted at the touch of a button, and the interior lighting is customizable. The redesigned software experience is powered by Unreal Engine.
The new R1S starts at $75,900, while the R1T starts at $69,900. Deliveries are available immediately, and you can already place your order online at Rivian's website.
I appreciate Rivian's trucks, but the overly cute light design is not to my taste.
