Chinese automaker BYD is making headlines once again with the revelation of the core specifications of its much-anticipated Yangwang U7 sedan. Due to the regulatory framework in China, all manufacturers need to apply for a sales license for each vehicle and the application process is public. That’s how we get an early peek into details of the upcoming EVs - such as the Yangwang’s first-ever sedan U7 and the Master Edition of the U8 SUV.
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently added the Yangwang U7 to its catalog of models open for public comment. From January 16 to January 22, the public can provide feedback, a crucial step in the regulatory process for selling vehicles in China.
We knew the Yangwang U7 was going to come with + 1,000 hp output but BYD pulled a fast one on us. The U7 is propelled by four electric motors, each boasting an impressive peak power output of 240 kW. That’s a total of 960 kW or just over 1,287 hp in the old speak. That’s a smidgen more than the Zeekr 001 FR or the Lucid Air Sapphire and a lot more than the Tesla Model S Plaid.
Measuring 207.3 inches in length, 78.7 inches in width, and 59.7 inches in height, the Yangwang U7 makes a serious statement on the road. With a spacious wheelbase of 124.4 inches, it offers ample room for passengers and cargo, and it tips the scales at 6,823 lb. Top speed? 168 mph.
Yangwang U7 detailsThe heart of this electric sedan is its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, a product of BYD's battery division, FinDreams. This battery is expected to be BYD's signature blade battery, promising enhanced safety and longevity. Unfortunately, the MIIT filing did not provide any more details on the battery capacity.
The list of options contains a panoramic sunroof, a power spoiler, a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, and digital rearview mirrors. While the regulatory filing provides essential details about the Yangwang U7's specifications, it leaves enthusiasts and potential buyers hungry for more with one important piece of the puzzle still missing - the price.
With the U7 out of the way, let’s look at the Yangwang U8 Master Edition. The U8, an off-road SUV, was the first production vehicle from the Yangwang brand and was unveiled in 2023. Now another version of the Yangwang U8 has also found a place in MIIT's filing catalog.
The Yangwang U8, initially offered in two versions - the Premium Edition and the Off-road Master Edition - has captured the imagination of off-road enthusiasts. While the Premium Edition hit the market in September last year, the Off-road Master Edition remained unavailable for purchase - until now.
Yangwang U8 Master Edition MIIT filingThough details in the latest Yangwang U8 filing are scarce, the model appears to offer exciting options for adventure seekers, including roof drone pods, tow hooks, an electric winch, and side tool platforms. This clearly is the long-awaited Master Edition.
